This song was first written in 1857 by James Lord Pierpont for Thanksgiving (a holiday set on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States) at Savannah Church in Georgia where the composer’s brother officiated.
James Lord Pierpont takes us to a world of snow, horse drawns leighs and bells. These traditional images of cold winters make us think of Santa Claus’s sledge with his reindeers.
